Catalog Description An introductory course to the Italian language and the cultures of its speakers. This course is designed for students with very little or no knowledge of Italian. It facilitates the practical application of the language in everyday oral and written communication at the beginning level. Since the focus will be on basic communication skills, the class will be conducted in Italian as much as possible. Students will learn structures that will enable them to function in Italian in everyday contexts while becoming familiar with the Italian speaking world. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Use and understand Italian well enough to be able to function in simple everyday situations. b. Derive meaning from authentic written materials including ads, menus, cartoons, songs and other informational texts. c. Communicate in writing in the form of brief notes, messages, postcards and letters. d. Compare and contrast Italian cultures and their native cultures to gain better understanding of the language, customs, attitudes and institutions. e. Listening and speaking tasks organized around thematic units on simple everyday topics to convey greetings, make introductions, ask and answer questions appropriate to personal needs in and out of the classroom. b. Discussion of cultural differences between the Italian speaking world and the students' own cultures. c. Presentation of grammar explanations to facilitate the acquisition and oral production of the language. d. Development of students' writing skills to enable them to produce in writing what they can communicate orally. e. Presentation of authentic reading material through library resources and Internet research. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lecture and presentation of communicative activities and supporting language structures. b. Discussion of cultural content. c. Multimedia presentations using the Internet, films, videos, audio CDs and cassettes. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Periodic written and oral evaluation of students proficiency in listening, reading, speaking and writing. b. Periodic tests. c.
