Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher or Pass in Italian 220 or four years of high school Italian or equivalent. Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description Italian 221 is the continuation of Italian 220. The course will continue to develop oral, listening, reading, and writing skills in order to improve proficiency in Italian. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Show increasing ability to narrate and describe in all tenses. b. Communicate in writing with greater creativity in any genre, (short story, essay), on contemporary topics and reflections about our society. c. Sustain a conversation with native speaker; discuss culture and everyday topics. d. Read extensively and comprehend authentic cultural materials such as newspaper articles, short essays, and short works of literature. e. Compare and contrast cultural aspects of the Italian and Francophone cultures and those of the learner in order to gain better understanding of the language, customs, values, attitudes, patterns of behavior and social mores. f. Acquire and demonstrate a deeper understanding of the history, geography, art, music, institutions and culture in general of the Italian speaking countries in order to understand the current language and culture and how they evolved. 5. Listening and speaking tasks organized around increasingly varied and complex situations dealing with opinions, feelings, agreement and disagreement. b. In-depth discussion of cultural differences between the Italian speaking world and the students' own cultures. c.
