Prerequisites A C or Pass grade or higher in Music 101 or equivalent. Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description Continuation of Music 101. This course will expand upon the concepts and skills utilized in improvisation. Along the way, students will participate in exercises, experiments, and performances utilizing jazz vocabulary, scales, and theory. Pentatonic scales and quartal/quintal harmony are introduced. The melodic minor scale as well as diminished and whole tone scales are applied to secondary dominants in various jazz styles. 4. Course Objectives At the conclusion of this course, the student will become proficient at spontaneously creating music with the appropriate style for standard jazz repertoire. The student will: a. Play/sing scales as applied to secondary dominants. b. Improvise melodies based on the pentatonic and blue scales. c. Play/sing arpeggios and improvise phrases based on the ii7-V7-I7 chord progression, using appropriate chord positions. d. Analyze recorded solos in terms of form and chord progression. e. Transcribe simple recorded chord progressions used in solos. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Access to the Internet. b. Classroom with pianos, audio/video system and computer projection capability. c.
