Course Prerequisite None. Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description An introductory course designed to familiarize the student with Afro-Cuban percussion instruments. Topics will include the role of each instrument, rhythmic concepts, forms, structure, and application. Experience in Afro-Cuban music is not required. 4. Course Objectives The student will: Distinguish and differentiate aurally the basic Afro-Cuban rhythmic genres. Perform the essential Afro-Cuban rhythms. Identify and analyze the polyrhythmic structure of Afro-Cuban songs. Apply the concepts of Afro-Cuban rhythm to traditional Afro-Cuban songs. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Large instrumental rehearsal room with piano and music stands. b. Stereo/video system. c. Capability to record rehearsals. 6. Special Materials Required of Student Concert attire. Differentiate between music styles from Cuba and other Caribbean Islands/countries Define different terms of Afro-Cuban vocabulary related to the instruments and rhythms. Appraise an Afro-Cuban musical performance by writing a 2-4-page report on the presentation. Demonstrate the basic rhythm of Martillo on Conga Drums, Bongo Drums and Timbale Drums. Demonstrate the basic rhythms of Martillo on Claves, Maracas, Guiro and Guira. Demonstrate the basic rhythm of Tumbao on Conga Drums, Bongo Drums and Timbale Drums.
