Catalog Description This course will present, by demonstration, description, and notation, the skills and knowledge that are necessary for a drummer to play in a variety of musical styles, including rock, funk, slow blues and shuffle. The student will develop the techniques needed to perform such music. Emphasis will be on reading, writing, and coordination, as the student develops his/her drumset musicianship. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Recognize differences in contemporary music styles, and how a musically mature drummer performs differently in various musical contexts, e.g. big band, rock combo, etc. b. Develop to a measurable degree the coordination needed to perform drumming assignments. c. Analyze and interpret assigned music using the style appropriate to the composer and time period of the music. d. Read and perform basic blues, eighth and sixteenth note rock, slow blues, funk and shuffle styles. e. Perform coordination exercises and representative patterns of basic drumset styles. 5.
