Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation None. Catalog Description Continuation of Music 201. This course will expand upon the concepts and skills utilized in improvisation. Along the way, students will actively participate in exercises, experiments, and performances utilizing jazz vocabulary, scales, and theory. Applying at will, six different sounds during the jazz solo: (1) melodic minor, (2)harmonic minor, (3) whole tone, (4) diminished, (5) blues, (6) modality. Course Objectives At the conclusion of this course, the student will become proficient at spontaneously creating music with the appropriate style for standard jazz repertoire. The student will: Analyze solo transcription examples for modulation concepts. Play/sing solo phrases using substitute chord progressions. Perform transcribed Be Bop solos instrumentally and vocally. Play and improvise based on standard jazz scales. Transcribe recordings of jazz standards. Instructional Facilities Access to the internet. Analyze and perform non-traditional blues songs and solos. Perform jazz tunes using advanced chord progressions. Identify aurally and write chord progressions with correct form.
