Piano literature from jazz history. Designed for the jazz studies emphasis in the music degree. Course Objectives The student will: Play piano pieces from 4 period of jazz: swing, be bop, cool, and hard bop. Play jazz scales including but not limited to: Aeolian, symmetrical dominant, locrian, Lydian augmented, Phrygian, altered dominant, whole tone, locrian natural 2 mode (aka. Mixo Lydian b6), diminished scale. Utilize modulating jazz chord progressions. Improvise melodies and harmonize them in the jazz style. Perform a minimum of two jazz standards from memory and transpose. Play ensemble music and/or accompaniment. Analyze and discuss chordal harmony (i.e., dominant 13ths).
