Catalog Description The genre of music known as Be Bop represents the innovations of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Max Roach, and Kenny Clarke. Elements of Jazz II extends and elaborates the principles that were introduced in Elements of Jazz I. Course Objectives The student will: Analyze advanced jazz chord structures with alternations and substitutions in all positions. Analyze advanced jazz compositions by form, harmony, melodic content and chord/scale relationships. Identify cadential and modulatory movement common to Be Bop, Swing, Afro-Cuban, Modal and Hard Bop styles. Take harmonic and melodic dictation of standard jazz repertoire. Transcribe recordings of advanced solo improvisations. Instructional Facilities Access to the internet. Classroom with pianos equipped with audio/video system and computer projection capability.
