Catalog Description An activity based course that studies representative Afro-Cuban compositions in a wide variety of styles at regular rehearsals and public performances. Though the musical literature differs each semester, the student meets course objectives through weekly/semesterly repetition in rehearsals and performances. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Examine and formulate Afro-Cuban practice and performance techniques. b. Distinguish and categorize the various Afro-Cuban musical styles. c. Memorize the use and function of the various percussion instruments associated with this style and play them in live performance. d. Prepare and present public performances. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Classroom. b. Music stands. c. Library of Afro-Cuban ensemble music. e. Whiteboard with music staves. f. Chairs with no arms. g. Audio/video sound system. 6. Representative pieces from the history of jazz music will be studied. b. Proper phrasing and articulation will be stressed. c. Technical weaknesses which hinder good reading will be exposed so that the student can improve his sight reading ability. d.
