Course Prerequisites Admission to the Registered Nursing Program. Course Corequisites Nursing 120 or equivalent. Recommended Preparation None 3. Catalog Description This course is designed to familiarize nursing students with the knowledge needed for safe administration of medications in the clinical setting. Students will be introduced to basic pharmacological concepts, including pharmacotherapeutics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacokinetics. Special consideration for the nursing role in administering drugs from a variety of major drug classifications will be presented. As students utilize the nursing process, emphasis will be placed on safety, critical thinking, pharmacologic principles related to aging, patient education and effective communication across the healthcare continuum. This is a required course for the Nursing Program. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Use basic pharmacological concepts. b. Describe the difference between chemical, generic, and trade names of drug products. c. Describe the pharmacologic class, mechanism of action, patient indications, expected patient response, nursing implications, and safety information for common prototype drugs and major drug classifications. d. Develop nursing interventions for each common prototype drug and major drug classifications that minimize adverse effects and maximize therapeutic effects. e. Discuss teaching methods and materials for appropriateness to health, nurse, and person for the common prototype drugs and common drug classifications. f. Identify the role of the professional nurse in relation to medication administration and education. g. Articulate the components and types of drug orders essential for safe, effective drug administration. h. Explain the correct measures to ensure the prevention of medication errors. i. Employ critical thinking skills to determine the effectiveness of medication administration on patient care outcomes. j. Identify potential drug-drug interactions and drug-food interactions based on physiologic responses to pharmacological agents and apply critical thinking skills for appropriate interventions. k. Identify the action, rationale for use, common and/or life-threatening side effects, nursing implications, and patient teaching issues for each major drug classification and common prototype drugs.
