Course Number Course Title Semester Units Semester Hours Based on a 16-18-week format NURS 253 A-B-C Work-Study 3 15 hours per week Externship 180 total volunteer hours 225 total paid hours 2. Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher in Nursing 130 or equivalent and approval by the Nursing faculty. Corequisite None Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description A work-study course authorized by the California Board of Registered Nursing in which a ڰAPP nursing student is employed by or volunteers at a clinical site with clinical facilities that have an established affiliation agreement with the Nursing Program. The clinical site supports the objectives of the course and provides supervision through RN mentors and preceptors. The student applies previously acquired nursing theory and clinical skills in the management of patient care. The college instructor and practice site mentors meet periodically to evaluate progress towards meeting objectives. This course is offered on a Pass/No Pass basis only and may be taken three times. This is an elective course in the Nursing Program. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Identify clinical goals and objectives which are specific for the clinical experience. b. Function within the guidelines of the Work-Study/Externship Program working cooperatively with and accepting supervision from the responsible RN preceptor. c. Demonstrate an improvement in the clinical performance skills identified in the clinical goals and objectives, with documentation in the evaluation at the end of the experience. d. Implement nursing care responsibilities under the direct or indirect supervision of the preceptor. e. Develop and utilize an organizational tool to be used in the clinical setting. f. Examine clinical problem solving and critical thinking skills to enhance patient care management. g. Demonstrate effective and timely communication with members of the health care delivery team. h. Maintain professional and ethical behavior and provide culturally competent care. i. Examine the importance of evidence based research which promotes best practices in nursing. 5. Instructional Facilities Selected acute, chronic, ambulatory care and home health settings with whom the Program establishes an affiliation agreement. Course Content Individualized tasks and assignments to meet the specific goals and objectives of each student. Function within the "Student Nurse" guidelines of the California Nursing Practice Act. 8. Method of Instruction a. Field experience. b. Nursing faculty will be available off site for support and guidance to assist student in accomplishing objectives. c. Clinical supervision will be the responsibility of hospital employee RN mentors and preceptors. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Written log and summary addressing extent to which objectives were attained. b. Collaborative evaluation by instructor and preceptor. c. Two on-site visits by faculty. 10. Outside Class Assignments Review of content from previous nursing courses such as IV insertion technique, positioning of patient, and physical assessment techniques. 11.
