Catalog Description This course is designed so that third semester nursing students may practice advanced medical/surgical and mental health clinical nursing techniques and clinical reasoning skills under the direction of a nursing faculty member. Experiences may involve practice with clinical reasoning skills required on the National Council Licensure Examination and participation in patient simulations with the option of low or high fidelity simulation. This course is offered as a Pass/No Pass basis only. This course is an elective course in the Nursing Program. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Formulate clinical reasoning skills in a variety of advanced medical/surgical and mental health patient care situations. b. Appropriately execute advanced nursing procedures on high fidelity simulated mannequins. c. Prioritize nursing care for patients with advanced health care problems. d. Formulate teaching strategies for patients and families to achieve specific outcomes. e. Examine the effects of cultural influences on the delivery of nursing care. f. Advanced clinical reasoning skills required on the National Council Licensure Exam. Select topics from Nursing 220 and 222 course content. Clinical judgment in patient care scenarios. Role of the nurse as provider of care, manager of care, and member within a discipline. 8. Method of Instruction Case presentations. Multimedia resources. Guided discussion of clinical reasoning examples. Demonstration of advanced nursing procedures. Patient scenarios using low and high fidelity simulation. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance Verbal questioning. Clinical simulation. Final exam demonstrating mastery of advanced nursing care in third semester nursing courses. 10. Outside Class Assignments Practice of nursing skills in skills lab. Video viewing of topics such as neuro assessment, management of stroke patients, and schizophrenia.
