Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher in OT 212. Corequisite OT 215 Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description This course is a continuation of OT 212 and is designed to teach the clinical application of orthopedic techniques in the clinical environment. Students will apply casts, assist in the reduction of fractures, apply and maintain traction configurations and devices, apply total body casts, and assist the orthopedic surgeon in minor and major surgical procedures. Students will also participate in pre and post-operative patient teaching. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Classify orthopedic injuries and administer appropriate casts in accordance with criteria established by the instructor and the attending physician. b. Assess and accurately record routine patient vital signs in accordance with criteria established by the instructor and hospital practice. c. Evaluate the clinical requirements for, and apply special casting braces in accordance with criteria established by the instructor and the attending physician. d. Demonstrate aseptic technique in the care of the orthopedic patient in accordance with criteria established by the instructor and hospital policy. e. Assist the physician in the surgical reduction and treatment of fractures in accordance with criteria established by the instructor, the physician and hospital policy. f. Communicate effectively with patients and families. g. Utilize appropriate patient teaching methods for patients experiencing orthopedic injuries. 5. Clinical evaluation by proctor. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Clinical observation by instructor/proctor of students applying orthopedic devices. b.
