Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher in OTA 200. Corequisite OTA 210 and 220 and 221. Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description Occupational Therapy Management explores the operations of an occupational therapy department. This course presents an introduction to basic management issues including: clerical, organizational, fiscal and supervisory components. Topics relate to traditional and nontraditional settings where occupational therapy assistants may be employed. Legal and ethical issues are explored. Quality assurance, research and continuing education to support continued professional growth are emphasized. Techniques for developing a resume, participating in an interview and requirements to practice are discussed and practiced. Practice opportunities in community based programs will be explored. 4. Course Objectives Describe and demonstrate the role of the OTA in management, accounting, purchasing, research, quality assurance, supervision, survey, fieldwork, professional behavior/conflict resolution, competency/continuing education and leadership. Describe safety procedures within an Occupational Therapy Department. Describe the difference between activity program and occupational therapy programming. Demonstrate knowledge of the process, guidelines and limitations of various reimbursement systems, including, but not limited to, federal and state reimbursement practices and third party and private payer Understand the implications of federal and state regulatory and legislative bodies as related to employment and practice, professional standards, supervision, ethics and continued learning Demonstrate knowledge of applicable national and state requirements for credentialing and continuing education. Prepare a resume based on completion of the OTA program at ڰAPP. Practice interview techniques for an entry level occupational therapy assistant position through simulation. Apply the Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility guidelines on an assessment of a public facility or campus area to effect change in service delivery and changes in the system. Assess personal knowledge and skills to determine potential role and responsibility in effecting change in service delivery policies and changes in the system. Identify community organizations that act as advocates for the benefit of the consumer and the profession, such as Easter Seals, Arthritis Foundation, etc. Articulate the importance of professional relationships between the occupational therapist , OTA, patient, family members, students and other professionals. 5.
