Catalog Description This course is a study of religion based on in-depth reading and careful analysis of the primary sacred texts associated with major religions of the East and the West. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Analyze passages from the worlds sacred writings. b. Critically evaluate the ideas embedded in scriptural works. c. Assess the structure of religious language (myth, symbol, parable, allegory, paradox). d. Compare and contrast Eastern and Western religious writings and canonical documents. e. Comprehend and evaluate the problems encountered by historians, social scientists, etc., when they use religious documents as data or source materials. 5. Course Content Students are presented with major scriptural traditions of human thought and belief about the divine and humans place in the cosmos. Emphasis is placed on scriptures and related religious documents of dominant world religions. a. Judaic writings Old Testament. (1) Legal documents and religion. (2) Philosophy of history. b. Method of Instruction a. Lecture. b. Group discussion. c. Film/slides. d. Group work in class on selected passages from sacred texts such as the Quran. e. Field trips. Students visit local religious institution, temples and churches. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Short essay assignments. b. Quizzes on specific scriptural passages. c. Midterm and final exams which include writing and objective components. d. Oral reports on a specific passage from a sacred text. e. Special projects to include a presentation on the concept of sacrifice. Students might also work in groups to interpret and report on a portion of ancient religious text. f. Term paper(s) on such topics as comparing the Old Testament and the New Testament. 10. Outside Class Assignments a. Students will be required to read passages from scriptures to prepare for each class meeting. b. Additional research may be required. c.
