Catalog Description A general overview of the cultures of Spain and Latin America while directly providing an opportunity to explore the cultural richness of the Hispanic world through a particular country. The course may be offered as an on-site tour of a selected Hispanic country. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Examine and appraise the cultural heritage of the Hispanic world. b. Assess his/her ability to read, see and listen thoroughly and analytically. c. Compare and contrast the Hispanic influence in the United States in relation to other cultural manifestations. d. Analyze and distinguish the life styles of the Hispanic world. e. Compare and contrast the cultural differences of the particular selected country against the general backdrop of Spanish and Latin American cultures. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Standard classroom: (1) VCR with monitor. (2) Maps. (3) Overhead projector and screen. b. Audio-visual equipment available: (1) Compact disc player. (2) DVD/Video player. (3) Target language maps. SPANISH 145 HISPANIC CIVILIZATIONS page 2 7. Course Content This course is designed to concentrate on a specific Hispanic geographical area. The geographical area covered may be different from semester to semester. As such, the specific course content may be different each time the course is offered. However, in each case the following will be discussed: a. Interpretation of movements in the arts, literature and philosophic thought. b. Discussion of attitudes, national and racial characteristics, and cultural patterns. c. Discussion of cultural differences between the Spanish speaking world and the students own cultures. d. If the course entails a tour, then students will be brought into direct contact with art, architecture, folklore and the everyday way of life of the area toured. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lectures and discussions. The instructor will direct the discussion by asking questions and making comments to help students come to a more focused awareness of Hispanic cultures. b. Group discussions. c. Questions and answers. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Written assignments will consist of keeping a journal, writing a research paper with the assistance of library resources and Internet research. b. Participation in cultural visitations and experiences. c. Active participation and discussion. d. Objective and essay examinations, including final. 10. Outside Class Assignments a.
