Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher or Pass in Spanish 121 or three years of high school Spanish or equivalent. Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description Spanish 220 is the continuation of Spanish 121. The course will continue to develop oral, listening, reading, and writing skills in order to acquire proficiency in Spanish. Not open to students with credit in Spanish 122. 4. Course Objectives The students will: a. Exhibit increasing ability to narrate and describe in past, present and future times. b. Experiment in writing with greater creativity in the form of short essays on contemporary topics and reflections about society. c. Construct cohesive sequence of sentences with increasing fluency. d. Examine authentic cultural materials such as newspaper articles and short essays. e. Compare and contrast Spanish-speaking cultures to their own and other cultures to further develop the awareness and gain a well-founded insight into the language, customs, attitudes, values, ideas, patterns of behavior, foods, music, art, institutions and geography of Spanish-speaking countries. 5. Thematic units on everyday topics to enable students to manage increasingly varied situations dealing with opinions, feelings, agreement and disagreement memorable events, important phases and political events of different Spanish speaking countries. b. Cultural differences between the Spanish-speaking world and the students' own cultures. c. Grammar topics to facilitate the acquisition and oral production of the language: the future and conditional tenses; compound tenses in the indicative and subjunctive moods.. d. More complex writing activities to enable students to produce in writing what they can communicate orally using the subjunctive mood. e. More complex authentic reading materials through course textbook, library resources, and Internet research as the basis for discussions and presentations. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lecture and presentation of communicative activities and supporting target language structures. b. Discussion of cultural content. c. Multimedia presentations. d. Asking and answering questions in Spanish. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Periodic written and oral evaluation of students' proficiency in listening, reading, speaking and writing through journals and in-class oral presentations on topics such as living arrangements, the environment, city-life, well-being, the work-place, the art, and current events.. b.
