Course Objectives The student will: Interpret and portray a character using introductory acting techniques. Analyze and research the background and the cultural context of the character and the story. Cultivate the development of their assigned character through the progressive phases of a theatrical production, including rehearsals, technical rehearsals, and performances. Demonstrate and execute specific directives provided by the shows director/technical manager. Interact with other members of the theatrical production in a respectful, courteous, professional and safe manner. Instructional Facilities Theatre arts complexStagehouse Theatre, Lab Theatre. Special Materials Required of Student None Course Content Performance in a Theatre Arts production, which will be presented to an audience. Introductory, practical usage of lighting/sound equipment, scenic elements, props, costumes, and makeup, and how these technical elements are utilized and integrated in production. Introductory acting, staging, and rehearsal techniques, within the context of a given production. Exploring the interrelationship of performance and technical elements for a given production, under the guidance of a director and the Theatre Arts staff. The student will be cast during an open audition process and given assignments as actors in a Theatre Arts production. Method of Instruction Instruction is completed through systematized phases of rehearsals, culminating in a presentation of the production for an audience. A postmortem session among all contributors is used to reflect on the process and final product of the production. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance Participation during rehearsal and performance of production. Project performance (work methods, interaction with others, dedication, reliability, and competency). Lines and movement memorized by determined deadline. Final project performance and strike (production tear down). Outside Class Assignments Memorization of dialogue, staging, and related information for assigned role(s). Character analysis.
