Course Number Course Title Semester Units Semester Hours THTR 131 Acting II 3 2 hours lecture: 32-36 hours 3 hours lab: 48-54 hours 64-72 outside-of-class hours for lecture 144-162 total hours 2. Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher or Pass in Theatre Arts 130 or equivalent and a C grade or higher or Pass or concurrent enrollment in Theatre Arts 101 or equivalent. Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description Through scenes and monologues the student will explore physical and vocal techniques in intermediate acting with special emphasis on theory and practice, script analysis, and dissecting modern and classical language as a major interpretive tool. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Analyze textual materials. b. Examine language as it assists in creating character. c. Practice techniques designed to enrich vocal resonance, tone, and pitch, in addition to those intended to perfect articulation of vowels and consonants. d. Demonstrate two memorized monologues: one contemporary and one Classical. e. Dramatize Classical and contemporary scenes/monologues with his/her peers. f. Illustrate a working vocabulary of theatre terms. g. Demonstrate a knowledge of stage safety practices and procedures. h. Analyze and evaluate acting techniques in a live theatrical performance. 5. Instructional Facilities Large empty room with chairs and tables or lab theatre, white board, and ability to project media. 6. Special Materials Required of Student Three ring binder for portfolio. Analyses of characters from different plays. e. Scenes with dialogue for two characters. f. Cold reading/audition techniques. g. Student of theatrical terminology and vocabulary. h. Attendance at a live theatrical event. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lectures precede each step in development of textual character analysis. b. Exercises and presentations are followed with evaluation and discussion from the students and instructor. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Written tests based on text and lectures. b. Exercises presented to class. c. Written critiques on campus theatre productions. d. Class participation and individual improvement of acting skills. e. Written character analysis. 10. Outside Class Assignments a. Specific reading assignments. b. Performance rehearsals including memorization. c. Attendance at ڰAPP productions. d. Written portfolio. 11.
