Course Prerequisites None Corequisite None Recommended Preparation A C grade or higher or Pass or concurrent enrollment in Theatre Arts 101 or equivalent. 3. Catalog Description This introductory course is designed to study current equipment, materials, techniques, creative theories, and applications used in the design and construction of costumes for theatre and film. Current fabric and fabric treatments will be utilized. Students will be instructed in the production of costume accessories. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Identify terms related to costume design and basic costume construction. b. Demonstrate the ability to interpret a character through design. c. Analyze and interpret the needs for assigned scripts. d. Utilize historical research in creating costume designs for assigned scripts. e. Practice safe and proper use of equipment in a costume shop. f. Examine basic professional construction methods and techniques such as plain seam, French seam, a dart, a snap, a hook and eye, and gathering. g. Construct costume and accessories for the Theatre Arts Departments theatrical productions. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Costume shop. b. Sewing machines. c. Large work tables. d. Ability to project slides, video, and DVD. 6. Special Materials Required of Student a. 11 x 14 sketchpad. b. Watercolor paper. c. Art supplies (watercolors, brushes, colored pencils). d. Script analysis and concept development. c. Historical costume research methods. d. Costume rendering techniques such as basic figure drawing, highlights and shadows, rendering formatting, etc. e. Terminology for the proper operation and understanding of costume equipment. f. Basic techniques for the proper construction of theatrical garments such as pressing techniques, cross stich and blind hemming, and basic alterations, etc. g. Materials and fabrics used in the construction of costume, and accessories. h. Construction of costumes and accessories for the Theatre Arts Departments production. 8. Method of Instruction a.
