Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher or Pass in Theatre Arts 134A or equivalent. Recommended Preparation A C grade or higher or Pass or concurrent enrollment in Theatre Arts 101 or equivalent. 3. Catalog Description This course is an intermediate study of materials, specialized techniques, creative theories and applications used in the design and construction of costumes for theatre and film. Current fabric and fabric treatments will be utilized. Students will be instructed in the production of costume accessories. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Identify terms related to costume design and construction. b. Demonstrate the ability to interpret a character through design. c. Analyze and interpret the needs for assigned scripts. d. Practice safe and proper use of equipment in a costume shop. e. Learn professional intermediate construction methods and techniques such as princess line seam, button hole, zipper, easing, etc. f. Construct costume and accessories for the Theatre Arts Departments theatrical productions. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Costume shop. b. Sewing machines. c. Large work tables. d. Ability to project slides, video and DVD. 6. Special Materials Required of Student a. 11 x 14 sketchpad. b. Watercolor paper. c. Art supplies (watercolors, brushes, colored pencils). d. Appropriate clothing. 7. Course Content a. Intermediate techniques of costume design for the theatre b. Script analysis and concept development. c. Research methods. Intermediate costume rendering techniques such as perspective figuring drawing, different media, etc. e. Terminology for the proper operation and understanding of costume equipment. f. Intermediate techniques for the proper construction of theatrical garments such as specialized alterations, machine blind hemming, trimmings and detail work, etc. g. Materials and fabrics used in the construction of costume, and accessories. h. Intermediate construction of costumes and accessories for the Theatre Arts Departments production. 8.
