Recommended Preparation A C grade or higher or Pass or concurrent enrollment in Theatre Arts 134 A or B or equivalent. 3. Catalog Description An introduction to costume design using the basic flat pattern method. Students will develop a personal master pattern, create original pattern designs, and learn to manipulate basic templates into patterns for different historical periods. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Create basic slopers such as bodice and sleeve. b. Analyze and develop patterning techniques from different historical periods. c. Demonstrate the proper construction techniques of period garments based on templates designed. d. Demonstrate the basic processes of measuring and fitting such as basic alignment and pinning. e. Differentiate between patterning methods of the stage vs. historical garments. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Costume shop. b. Sewing machines. c. Cutting tables. d. Sewing supplies. 6. Special Materials Required of Student a. Yard stick/ 18 clear plastic ruler. b. Five yards of muslin. 7. Course Content a. Develop personal sloper such as bodice and sleeve. b. Introductory study of historical style and silhouettes and how they are achieved. f. Demonstrations on pattern enlargement techniques. g.
