Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description A survey of 20th century fashion in the western world. An in-depth study of fashion trends, designers, fabrics and accessories from 1900 to 2000. A look at how religious, political and economic conditions affect popular clothing trends and the design of theatrical costumes. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Recognize the categorical placement of modes of dress worn during the 20th century. b. Identify the vocabulary used in identification and description of garments, fashion accessories and 20th century designers. c. Compare present day fashions with costumes of the past to understand style development and its affect on society. d. Examine some of the social graces and customs, which determined the development of particular styles of dress. e. Analyze how 20th century fashion has been affected by the theatre and by film. 5. Review of the Bustle Period (1865-1900). (1) Discussion of the major historical developments, which lead to the changes of the 20th century. b. The Edwardian Period (1900-1908). The Fifties (1950-1959). (1) The fabric revolution synthetic fibers. (2) French Couture, knock-offs and the effects of television. h. The Sixties (1960-1969). (1) Political leaders as style leaders.
