Course Prerequisites None Corequisite None Recommended Preparation A C grade or higher or Pass or concurrent enrollment in Theatre Arts 101 or equivalent. 3. Catalog Description This course is designed to introduce students to the planning and construction of scenery for the stage, television and film. The tools, methods and materials of scenic production will be examined and put to use. Work in the scene shop for Theatre Arts Department productions is required. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Identify the procedures which produce scenery for the stage, television and film. b. Identify and differentiate the application of systems, equipment and machines used in the theatre. c. Demonstrate an understanding of scene shop protocol and safety. d. Develop ability in the use of scenic construction tools and materials. e. Analyze various scenic design projects and differentiate design component parts for construction. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Lecture room with video projection ability. b. Scene shop for demonstrations and lab. 6. Scene shop protocol and safety. b. Introduction to drafting, computer aided drawing, three view drawing and an understanding of technical drawings as related to stagecrafts for theatre, television and film. c. Information regarding the hardware, lumber, metal, soft goods and other materials used for scenic construction, and the procedures and tools with which those materials are utilized. d. Scenic painting techniques, applications, and materials used for various scenic elements. e. Mechanical scenic systems that are utilized in theatre, film and television and the set up and safe operation for those systems. f. Analysis of scenic designs, generation of technical drawings and manufacture of those scenic elements. g. Weekly lab component demonstrating practical application of lecture material. 8.
