Catalog Description This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental theory and practice of modern scenic design, the tools that are available to scenic designers, methods of research and historical investigation for scenery and properties, the function of scenery and properties in the theatre, and modeling and rendering techniques for scenic design presentation. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Recognize and understand the various functions and uses for scenery and properties in the theatre. b. Differentiate the various styles, approaches, theories and techniques of scenic and property design. c. Distinguish and research major trends and styles of architecture and furnishings and apply that research to scenic and property design. d. Examine the methods and tools that produce theatre scenery and properties and participate in the process of preparing those elements for presentation to an audience. e. Utilize modeling and rendering techniques for scenic and property design presentations. f. Analyze dramatic literature from a scenic design perspective. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Lecture room with video projection ability. b. Scene shop for demonstrations and lab. 6. Fundamental scenic rendering and modeling techniques. f. Script analysis and research methods from a scenic design perspective. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lectures. b. Viewing and evaluation of prerecorded materials. c. Group discussion. d. Demonstration of various drawing, rendering and modeling techniques. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a.
