Course Number Course Title Semester Units Semester Hours THTR 254A Advanced Design I 3 2 hours lecture 3 hours laboratory 2. Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher or Pass in Theater Arts 134A or 134B or 136 or 156 or 157 or equivalent. Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description Development and strengthening of insights and skills needed to undertake a theatrical design project. Special emphasis in at least one area of design introduced in Fundamentals of Costume Design and Construction, Theatre Makeup, Fundamentals of Scenic Design or Fundamentals of Stage Lighting and Sound. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Select at least one area of theatre design and formulate and/or complete a finished design. b. Research and prepare a presentation regarding a design project based on appropriate dramatic literature. c. Demonstrate an expertise in a proposed area of theater design and present relevant design research, sketches, renderings, drafting or other material that support this knowledge. d. Evaluate, debate and defend design choices. 5. Instructional Facilities The Theater Arts complex Stage House Theatre, Lab Theatre, Costume/Scene shop, and lighting sound booth. 6. Special Materials Required of Student a. 11 x 14 sketch pad. b. Water color paper (amount to be determined). c. Drafting supplies. d. Plastic lighting template. e. Design one element for a book project or a ڰAPP Theatre Arts production. c. Design process for moving a theatrical production out of a normal time period and/or a normal location. d. Attend meetings for the assigned ڰAPP Theater Arts production and display, defend and modify individual choices. e. Resumes. f. Design portfolios. 8. Method of Instruction Lecture. Discussion c, Project supervision including weekly design meetings. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Student portfolio and resume final project. b. Observation of completed theatrical design. c. Inspection and analysis of proposed design approach to a given script. d. Oral theatrical design project performance and defense. e.
